Resolutions Recap: 2009

2010 is just around the corner, so I thought this would be a good time to look back at our '09 resolutions to see how we did.

1. Become a better mailer.
FAIL. I think I did slightly better at taking stuff to the post office and mailing it. But only slightly. There's still a Zappos box of shoes sitting in my closet waiting to be returned. On the plus side, I managed to get out birth announcements and Christmas cards this year by using a company that does the mailing for you. Score!

2. Make a new recipe once a week from each of the cookbooks in our collection.
FAIL. We lasted about 3 weeks.

3. Exercise more.
Overall, FAIL. We've had our spurts of exercise, with too many layoffs in between. On a positive note, I had a fairly active pregnancy, managing to train for an 8k in month 5 that I then skipped (at which point I ceased running). I know I'm entitled to play the pregnancy and birth and newborn baby cards for this year, but I didn't want to. Joe's too hard on himself and does pretty good in the exercise category if you ask me, but I don't know that he achieved his goal of making 2009 "the year of the leg."

4. Stop eating meat from CAFOs (humongous animal feedlots).
PASS! Funny, I think we would've assumed at the outset that this resolution was going to be the hardest to keep. Now, keep in mind that we left a MAJOR loophole by allowing ourselves to ignore our "meat rules" when served food prepared for us by family or friends. We realized this year that we have a surprising amount of family events. Also, in a year of having a baby, we were (thankfully, and hopefully very graciously) provided many delicious meals by family and friends in the weeks after June's arrival, so that made for a LOT of exceptions. I tend to give Joe a hard time, because he definitely flat out cheated more often than I did, but I think we both succeeded overall. Restaurants and social affairs were the source of all cheating, not home cooking.

Well, that's all. Just felt like taking stock and fessing up. Some 2009 confessions and our 2010 resolutions are coming soon, so think about what yours are so that you can leave a comment and share -- I'm curious.

I think Barbara Kingsolver left herself the same loophole in "Animal Vegetable Miracle" about restaurants and food prepared by others.

I have been VERY impressed by your CAFO resolution success. Good for you guys...

Nicely done. And I'm still laughing about the "year of the leg"--don't think that's part of the Chinese calendar, now is it?
