St. Pat's (On Failing my Mother)

Happy St. Patrick's Day.  I forgot it was today until I showed up in Georgia's music class where almost all of the other little kids were decked out in green.  Woops.

For all the things that I try to do as a mom, there are many others that go by the wayside.  So far, decorating for "secondary" holidays is one of them.

You should have seen our house when I was a kid!  Valentine's Day had the place decked out in hearts; on the 4th of July our kitchen looked like a patriotic explosion; I wouldn't have put it past my mom to figure out a way to decorate for Arbor Day.  Occasions like St. Patrick's Day and New Year's involved not only decorations but also traditional foods.  I loved it all.  My friends marveled at it.

Alas, I am not destined to repeat it, and I have decided I'm okay with that.  I hope you're not too disappointed, Mom, but this way you'll always remain the standard bearer.

So, everybody raise your glasses tonight and toast to giving yourself a pass now and then!  Nobody does it all, right?

Your house was always so well decorated for every holiday. It was such a great place to hang out! Now, being a mother myself, I have no idea how your mom did it all. Amazing.

If it makes you feel any better, Evelyn wore pink all day yesterday. I totally forgot about St. Pat's Day as well.

I completely forgot about St. Patrick's day until yesterday afternoon, too. Maybe we should all just plan to add one holiday to our repetoire every few years, by the time the kids are in high school, we may have them covered.

Um, I think you get a pass. Good grief.

Isn't the point of the secondary holidays to provide art activities for elementary school teachers? In which case, you don't have to remember to decorate for the holidays; once the girls are in school they'll bring home the decorations to you.

Emily, I like the way you think!
