Laughing at Myself

Scene 1:  Thursday evening, the kids are in bed.  The conversation between Joe and me turns to pop music, which our children have somewhat intentionally, but mostly unintentionally, not been hearing a ton of lately.    Sentences that were actually uttered during this conversation included, "Do you think our kids are too sheltered?" and, "Well, it's not like it's a necessity for a five year old to know Taylor Swift - like their life will be burdened without that."

Scene 2:  The next day.  Georgia is bouncing around the house after school and starts singing, "We are never, ever, ever getting back together!"  Surprised, I stop in my tracks and ask, "Wait - how do you know that?"  She replies, "Ms. Michele's phone played it today.  It's Taylor Swift."  The accompanying, "Duh, Mom!" was not stated but implied.

Scenes 3 - 100:  The rest of the weekend.  Georgia repeats the single line of this song that she knows ("We are never, ever, ever getting back together") over, and over, and over again.  This soon morphs into her simply saying, "Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift. Taylor Swift," over, and over, and over again.  It has no melody and seems to have no purpose other than mindlessly driving me crazy.  (I try not to let on that it is driving me crazy, under the assumption that doing so will only increase Georgia's resolve, but I draw the line at the dinner table where it is finally declared that those who cannot stop saying "Taylor Swift" over and over again must go elsewhere for lack of better manners.)  Joe has a propensity to get songs stuck in his head REAL, REAL bad, and it appears that this trait has been genetically passed on to Georgia.  Soon, June too is singing, "We are never, ever getting back together!" having no idea what she's saying but loving it all the same.

Scene 101:  I'm driving the van, with Waylon as my only passenger.  I flip from station to station and back again in search of Taylor Swift's "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" because I totally love this song right now.  It's only a matter of minutes until it pops up.  Secretly, my biggest annoyance with Georgia's obsession is that she's going to ruin it for me.  It is a good thing that Joe is a very secure man when it comes to our relationship, because I have a hidden love for rocking out to breakup anthems.  Pink, Kelly Clarkson, maybe even Alanis, you name it.  Love them.  Welcome aboard, Taylor Swift.

Here's the video in case you don't know what I'm talking about.  Should I show it to the girls, I wonder?  Because that would pretty much guarantee the development of Scene 102, Georgia and June's rockin' Taylor Swift dance party singalong...

Ha! Confession: Last night I created a "Call Me Maybe" Pandora station to listen to while preparing for a bbq at our house. That T.S. song came on and I asked Bobby which one of her ex-boyfriends that song is about. (Do you know?) And then later he busted me singing along to a different T.S. song..."You do know you're 36 years old, right?" Me-"so."

That's hilarious! I could have used that ringtone a few times many years ago. I want to know who was on the other end of Ms. Michele's phone call and whether it was a reminder or she just likes the song :). Okay, we are very sheltered because I've never heard it before but I'm sure I'll be singing down the hallway now. At least T.S. has good judgment considering she has such a young fan base!

P.S. Not fair that she's now making millions and I'm pretty sure I composed that chorus 20 years ago in the shower.

I think I read it was about Jake. Too bad. Apparently he didn't like her music and thought there were lots of Indie bands cooler than her. So when they broke up she wanted to make a hit about his pretentiousness that he would hate all the more because it was a pop song. Okay, HOW DO I KNOW THIS????

Never fear, "Is she too sheltered" is only a concern you have about your first born child. For about 5 minutes.

...says the mother of the boy running around singing, "Katy Perry in the house tonight!" ; )

You're right.

Peyton's latest "Mom song" fascination is to belt out "I will wait, I will wait, for you" at the top of his lungs (Mumford & Sons) when not speed singing "Sing a Song of Sixpence" or "Beyond the Sea". His previous favorites have been "Somebody that I Used to Know" and "Tonight (We Are Young)" by Gotye and Fun. At least just the chorus of "Tonight", not the part about the friends getting high in the bathroom while someone is asking about a scar caused by the singer....

Get them liking your music early so that they won't make you change the station later!
